This is the blog of Fred Schumacher, a retired North Dakota native grass seed farmer. Working alone as a farmer gave me a lot of time to think and contemplate. While my body functioned on muscle memory, my mind was free to wander without distraction, attempting to solve perplexing problems such as the nature of human nature and the origin and nature of human language. Since 1991, my home has been in the wilds of northern Minnesota’s boreal forest, another place of isolation and silence that is conducive to thought.
